Hello, welcome to my portfolio website. Now, I know this site is called Lowercase Portfolio, and the domain name is lowercase7, however, my name is Laura. Laura Marjorie Nelson if you want to go into the specifics. I currently am employed at IBM, working as an RPA (Robotic Process Automation) Developer. I graduated from Nova Scotia Community College's (NSCC's) Information Technology (IT) program, specializing in web development/programming.
During my two years at NSCC, I went from having fallen in love with websites, and learning the basics of HTML and CSS, to having a better understanding of websites. I have learned about servers, and virtual hosts on servers. I have learned more about HTML and CSS practices. I have learned to love JavaScript, about PHP and Ruby on Rails. I have ventured out to work on some of my own projects, outside of our courses' assignments.
Since I was fairly young, I joined Girl Guides of Canada, starting off at the lowest level (Sparks). Throughout my many years, I have completed and received both my Canada Cord and my Gold Chief Commissioner's Award.
As well, for two years, I competed in First Lego League (FLL) with my Pathfinder unit. Once I was too old, I volunteered my time to Acadia Robotics' FLL competition. My role on that day is titled Pit Runner. That means that throughout the day, I bring the various teams from their pits to where they are supposed to go. In the morning, I bring them to their judging rooms (project, core values, robot design). In the afternoon, I take them and line them up for their actual competition.
Speaking of competition, for the last two years I have worked at Armdale Yacht Club (AYC), as a race management officer. For the start of the race, I would have to use the cannon and air horn, along with raising and lowering the flags for the start. If any boat crossed early, I would have to signal with another flag, and call them out for having crossed early. Once the race has started, I wait in the race hut until all the boats return. When the boats cross the line, I record their times and send out an audible sound (cannon for first, airhorn for the rest).
Once I started working at AYC, I started racing with a small crew. It has been an interesting time trying to work with a group of people who have never sailed before. That means that while we were racing, we learned more and more about sailing and racing. There was a lot of work to be done, and there still is a lot of learning we have to do.
One of the things I have learned about myself is the fact that I am a hard worker, or at least, that is what many have told me. This can be seen in some of my projects that I have done. To see my most updated resume, please click the link after this sentence. My Resume
Sometime in the future, I would like to become a writer (publish fiction) and/or become an entrepreneur in the IT industry. I would accomplish the becoming an entrepreneur by first working for a company (or companies?). I would also need to work on an idea, and would prefer to work with a partner. I will probably wait many years, prior trying to become an entrepreneur. In order to become a writer, I need to sit down and work through a story from start to finish. I would need to go through the process of figuring out all the small points of the story, as well as spending time to write. Once a story is completed, I would have to go and see if I can find an editor and a publisher, and see if any are willing to publish my stories.
